BI Detains Chinese Student Involved in Taho Incident
MANDALUYONG, Philippines—Operatives of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) Intelligence Division detained Tuesday evening the viral Chinese student that threw soybean curd drink to a police officer last February 9.
According to BI Spokesperson Dana Krizia Sandoval, their operatives were armed with a Mission Order signed by BI Commissioner Jaime Morente to gain custody over Zhang Jiale, 23, for violating immigration laws.
“Zhang has already been charged as an undesirable alien for posing as a risk to public interest,” said Sandoval. “The incident showed her disrespect towards persons of authority, which in turn shows her disrespect to the country,” she added.
She added that Zhang may face deportation and eventual blacklisting, following the said incident. The Bureau is expected to resolve her case in the next few weeks.
It can be recalled that Zhang went viral on social media after throwing a cup of soy bean curd drink to a police officer after being lawfully prohibited from entering the MRT station with a beverage. She reportedly posted bail after being charged for direct assault, disobedience to an agent of a person in authority, and unjust vexation by the Mandaluyong City prosecutor’s office.
Sandoval clarified that her court case and her immigration case are two different matters. “Her court case will run independent from her immigration case,” said Sandoval. “If found deportable, we will wait for the resolution of her court case before implementing the deportation,” she added.
Zhang is currently detained at the BI Warden Facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig pending deportation proceedings.
